Item Number: ALB250

2K Aluminum Blackener is a room temperature, brush-on decorative blackener for use exclusively on aluminum alloys.  It is ideal for blackening of engravings or touch up of aluminum components.

This solution is a low odor, water based, non-flammable metal salt blend and requires no heat or electricity to produce a black finish on aluminum.  A clear protective topcoat is normally used as a sealant over the finish.

It is important to clean the aluminum before any coloring operation.  Ensure that all oils, waxes, flux remnants, mold release agents, and oxides are removed from the metal surface. The best method of cleaning most materials is to sandblast.  If this method is undesirable then non residual solvents such as acetone, isopropyl or methyl alcohol, or lacquer thinner are useful for removal of most oils and waxes.   When grease is present clean the item with a TSP solution or blend of ammonia, soap, and water.

All aluminum carries a transparent, natural oxide that must be removed prior to blackening.  2K Technologies manufactures and highly recommends the use of 2K Metal Cleaner for optimal performance on aluminum.  2K Metal Cleaner is a fast acting strong acid metal brightener for severe tarnish and oxide removal.

When the metal is thoroughly clean water will “sheet” or cover the whole surface rather than bead up.  Rinse the metal well and dry thoroughly.  From here on, handle the work only by the edges.  Apply blackening solution within 30 minutes.

The solutions made by 2K Technologies are ready to use and formulated to be applied at room temperature.  The method of application depends on the size and shape of the work.

  • Immersion into the blackening solution.  Allow to react until desired finish is achieved.
  • Brushing the blackener on using brushes, sponges, wads of cheesecloth, and other improvised tools to dab solution onto the metal.
  • Spray the blackening solution using spritzer.  Be sure to clean the spray components after use as any metal components will be attacked by the solution.  WARNING!! Avoid inhalation of the mist.

Note: ensure there is adequate ventilation during application as reaction gases are emitted during the blackening process.

In all cases allow the solution to fully react; reapply to ensure an adequate supply of metal salt for reaction then rinse thoroughly in clean water to remove any acid remnants.

Dry the surface by using warm air or a fan to prevent the appearance of red corrosion. CAUTION!!  Handling the blackened surface at this point may result in a damaged finish (see Tips and Tricks below).

Note:  the results will be affected by the temperature of the metal, the temperature of the solution, and the duration of exposure to the blackening solution.

Tips and Tricks

  • There are many aluminum alloys available and the 2K Aluminum Blackener will behave slightly different with each – you may wish to test for your specific application.
  • To promote adhesion it is recommended that the solution be worked into the aluminum by using a 3M Scotchbrite pad or equivalent then allowing the reaction to proceed unaided until a uniform grey/black appearance is achieved.
  • DO NOT handle the finish during rinsing – should any of the blackening come off during the rinsing process gently dry the piece and reapply the blackening solution.  Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry.
  • Lightly spraying the surface with a non-residual solvent like acetone or isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol will help disperse any water from the surface and help prevent formation of red corrosion while minimizing any damage to the finish.
  • This solution corrodes the surface of the aluminum resulting in a blackened surface.  Adhesion improves as the finish dries but it is susceptible to damage from handling and will have some loose black dust on the surface.  At this point you may choose to wipe the piece gently to remove the loose black particulate and either re-treat with the blackening solution, or seal with a clear topcoat to protect the finish.

Once the desired finish is achieved it needs to be protected by applying a clear topcoat to improve the resistance to scratching and flaking.  The topcoat should be selected to provide adequate protection for the piece in its intended environment.

Blackening solutions are mild acidic solutions and can cause irritation to the skin and eyes.  They are generally considered consumer friendly and carry no special restrictions and require no special safety precautions other than the normal effort to keep the liquid out of the eyes and to avoid prolonged skin exposure.  KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN!  Rubber gloves and safety glasses should be worn.  Read MSDS before using.  Avoid inhaling vapors or mist.

Product should be stored indoors in original closed container. To prevent contamination of the solution, used product should not be introduced back into the original container.
